South Fair Oaks is the local name for the southern tip of North Fair Oaks, the small pocket between the Caltrain tracks and El Camino Real where Redwood City meets Atherton. Streets like Dexter, Glendale, Columbia and Berkshire avenues run between the railroad and El Camino. Like the rest of North Fair Oaks, it is unincorporated San Mateo County with a Redwood City mailing address, so county departments handle local services rather than a city hall.
El Camino Real forms the southwest edge, with restaurants, shops and services within a short walk, and Atherton's tree lined streets begin right across it. Middlefield Road and the Fair Oaks library branch and community center are a few blocks north across the tracks. Downtown Redwood City and downtown Menlo Park are each a short drive away.
South Fair Oaks is the southern tip of the shaded North Fair Oaks area, between the Caltrain tracks and El Camino Real. Borders are approximate, see the Redwood City map for the full picture.
