Downtown Los Altos Homes and Neighborhood Guide
Los Altos neighborhood guide
Downtown Los Altos is the town center laid out around the old Southern Pacific station, where the first lots sold at an outdoor barbecue in March 1907. The triangle of Main, State and First streets is still called The Village, and it remains the social heart of town.
Historic stops include the 1910 Shoup Building, the 1913 Craftsman depot at 288 First Street, the J. Gilbert Smith House and the Los Altos History Museum. The streets just off Main and State hold some of the most walkable homes in Los Altos, with the farmers market, restaurants and the library a few minutes away on foot.

Homes and Streets
Downtown itself is small, so the homes that count as Village living are on the quiet streets around it: older cottages and ranch homes on tree lined blocks off Edith Avenue, University Avenue and San Antonio Road, with a growing number of custom rebuilds and a handful of newer townhomes and condos near the shops. Walkability to Main Street is the premium here, and homes within a few blocks rarely sit long.
